Launch of new website
Reach Out Be A Good Neighbour's new website was launched on 4/11/08 by Senator David Norris at the Mansion House, Dublin.
Charlie Roarty, General manager, Energy Action, spoke of the dangers to elderly people living alone from fuel poverty. Saving on fuel in the winter months is, in the case of elderly people, a false economy - they are at risk of hypothermia and more susceptible to strokes, heart attacks, pneumonia and chest infections.
The strong link between social isolation and loneliness and depression was also raised.
The website hosts a wealth of downloadable information regarding the needs of older people including hypothermia, keeping warm, social isolation, safety & security, fuel poverty, elder abuse and suggestions on how neighbours can help. The site has many useful links to other statutory and voluntary organisations with information relevant to the elderly.
ESB Customer Supply, in partnership with Social Inclusion, Dublin City Council, sponsored the development of the website.
Pat Fenlon, General Manager, ESB Customer Supply, spoke of the need to keep warm. ESB Customer Supply, with Age Action and the Health Service Executive, has produced Keep Warm This Winter, a free information pack.
